Local lady Deb Grant is walking to fundraise for Headway, Worcestershire as a way of giving back to the charity who supported her.
Deb’s story:
In 2014 I had a significant near fatal bleed affecting frontal and temporal lobe deep in my brain needing open surgery. It was a life changing injury. I lost important parts of my life. As a result I live with many invisible long term consequences. I have the use of all of my limbs & laugh at your jokes but that doesn’t mean I’m back to my ‘normal’ self. I continue to have to work very hard every day with consequences of my traumatic brain injury (TBI). Motivation is one of the consequences so this challenge is another big thing I’ll be proud to achieve.
Headway, Worcestershire is dedicated tosupporting people affected by acquired brain injury (ABI) across Worcestershire. The work that the local charity undertakes really makes a difference to those living with ABIs. The team offer specialist support, information and services to brain injury survivors, their families and carers, as well as to professionals in the health and legal fields.
Headway Worcestershire’s vision is to recognise that every brain injury affects different people in different ways.
We recognise that each person is unique and tailor our support to meet their needs and circumstances. Our aim is to help people achieve their goals and enjoy a quality of life, consistent with their desires and interests. Building a community where people with a brain injury are valued respected and able to live a fulfilling life, while campaigning for greater public awareness and a better understanding of the impact of brain injury.
Deb continues:
Since my TBI I need to set a challenge for myself each day that people without a life changing brain injury wouldn’t need to think about, let alone think it was a challenge. This walk will help me stay physically and mentally fitter. Another consequence of my injury is I have daily fatigue where I need a sleep in afternoon, so knowing I’ve ‘earned’ a sleep makes me feel I deserve my sleep!
Headway Worcestershire have supported and guided me in my rehabilitation to rediscover my new self with the understanding, care and boundaries I was shown by them. They’ve continue to be hugely valuable to me.
